DiPS Database
All the programs that make up the DiPS Distribution Planning System have been designed to obtain their data from a central database file. The KINGPIN function is used to add, delete, modify and transfer data within this file as well as acting as a comprehensive report generator.
Depots, Customers, Suppliers, Vehicles, Orders, Shipments and Routes each have their own data properties pages. All relevant parameters such as Road Speeds, Work Standards, Products and Routing Algorithms may be defined by users.
Delivery points are normally located automatically on entry by using their postcode. The POSTFILE databank provides the names and grid references of all 20million postcodes. Ordnance Survey maps (down to street level) are also available to help locate the exact position of a delivery point and provide printed maps where necessary.

Additional address lookup facilities are available under an extra license from
QuickAddress. For illegal codes the gazetteer databank is provided to help users generate grid references from the 50000 place names stored in the UK file.

To calculate times and distances between locations, the ROADFILE databanks contain detailed information on all significant road junctions and links. By choosing such a detailed scale it was possible to accurately reflect city centre traffic systems including 1-way streets and pedestrianised areas. It is also a feature of the DiPS software that each user-defined grid reference (e.g. CALL entities) will be automatically linked to its nearest junction(s) dependent upon the logic of the local road system. There is, therefore, no need to manually create additional detail to the databank or to define artificial barriers.   Up to twenty different road classifications can be used or excluded with each having its own travel speed defined by the user. Congested, mountainous and narrow roads are already identified and speeds may be downgraded as required. Updates to the databank may be provided on a regular basis as new roads open or classifications change. Individual links can be modified according to a user's needs (e.g. road works).
